As a parent you want your children to be able to be the best them they can be. We are challenged on a daily basis to provide what our children need to thrive and in this case, it was a success! When Liam was an infant he didn’t have the fine motor skills down to hold his bottle. So with the help of his therapist we were able to improvise. We knew that Liam would love to hold his own bottle, because like most little ones “they want to do it themselves”.
So, Liam’s wonderful physical therapist (PT) in New Mexico gave us this great idea that was shared with her by one of her other moms. Liam having Trisomy 9 as well as Trisomy 18 has given him many challenges but with the help of our God he has exceeded any expectations. As long as we keep on trusting the Lord to provide for Liam, he will keep on meeting milestones.
I want to bless other superhero families also known as “special needs” families with what we’ve learned along the way and this is just one of the many blessings.
- Oball rattle (Target was the cheapest I found it…link at end of post)
- Bottle you typically use
- writing utensil (I used a sharpie)
To begin place the bottle on top of the Oball Rattle so you can mark it. This helps you to know where to make the cut. I made the marks and cut a little smaller than the bottle so it will hold well because the rubber stretches. So after you have your marks, make the cuts. The edges will be a little sharp so I just burned them to soften them. Now place on your child’s bottle and see how they do!
Please remember not all babies are at the same developmental stages and your baby may not be able to grip this holder yet. Don’t be discouraged, just give them some time and don’t give up!
When we first made Liam’s Oball rattle bottle holder he had no interest in it so we waited until he showed an interest in holding his bottle (lifting hands, grabbing things). In the beginning the bottle was too heavy but he still tried with our help he was able to hold it. Eventually his muscles grew and he could hold it all by himself.

Happy Parenting! I hope your child enjoys this as much as Liam does!
